Door #4 God’s eternal purpose

Discuss gaining a greater understanding of the eternal purpose of God mentioned in Ephesians 3:11. What is God’s eternal purpose?  Many of us are at 1st grade in understanding it.  We should view and live with the end (God’s end,His purposes) in mind.  If our vision and understanding is skewed, so will be our living {see

  2. Charlie, et al,

    We can only speculate on what God’s eternal purpose is because I’m not sure He has told us in so many words. We know He want’s all men to come to Him……meaning He wants all men to enter into an eternal fellowship with Him. But that can’t be the end……we are talking about eternity and I am imagining a continual growth on our part forever and ever as this fellowship grows and grows.

    An eternal summer with the heavenly golf course(s) and the fishing holes always waiting and a companion to always enjoy them with me………and some good deep discussion over that first cup of coffee every morning……ahhhhh, just contemplating it gives me goose bumps.

  3. Fore! Bob you are amazing! I haven’t heard too many folks say that they think we will be learning and growing through out eternity. My word is fellershipping! I can fellership and fish too :).

    Eternity is hard to comprehend. One thing I know for sure, it’s NOT “forever” just stuck on the end of time. Only God is eternal. We have been brought into Him and He into us. How? You guessed it by His Spirit. So we are in eternity now. Eternity is within.

    In a nutshell, I’d say God’s eternal purpose is to be with His creation in a way of life. We have been given (done deal) eternal life NOW. It can only get better!

    What’s beyond earthly death? I’m not sure. God hasn’t filled us in much on that one. But I know it will be with Him and many others. I don’t think we will ever plumb the depths of God’s love and plan. So I agree with you bro, it will just go on and on and keep growing, learning, worshipping, and fishing 🙂 and maybe when I no longer have back problems, playing golf too :).

  4. Charlie, et al,

    You know I’m sorta joking about the golf and fishing in heaven, but who knows. It has not really been revealed what we’ll be doing but we’ve heard something about new bodies…….I don’t know if that means physical bodies or if it is really a spiritual “body”. All I know as presented by Paul, it will be wonderful and better then we could ever hope for…….so I take the most enjoyable thing (with an exception or two) and project these things into my picture of heaven.

    One of the things which I think we can expect is the reuniting with those who have gone on before us. We can share thoughts and ideas in our maturity with our parents, our friends, our loved ones and re-experience our joy of fellowship with those folks. Maybe some of them have taken up heavenly golf………..I can just imagine the first tee box with some heavenly foursomes…….wow!!!!

  5. Hey Bob, you bring up a good point. I’ve heard debate on both sides of this issue about reuniting with our loved ones, friends, and all who have gone before. I’m gonna do a “Bob” thang, and ask a few questions 8-O.

    The religious dudes try to trick Jesus with a question about “whose wife is she?” So the subject is referring to earthly relationships. Lk. 20:34-36 talks about the “children of this world” and the “children/sons of God.” Then in v.35, “But those who are counted worthy to attain that age, and the resurrection from the dead, neither marry nor are given in marriage;”

    What does that mean? Does that mean no more sex!!? I better leave that one alone 😆 .

    Isn’t it interesting that in none of the translations does it say “heaven,” but “that age.” Maybe we could include Door #2 discussion with this :). I’m sure “that age” would also include the kingdom of God, don’t you?

    V.36 “nor can they die anymore, for they are equal to the angels and are sons of God, being sons of the resurrection.”
    I just wonder what that means too?

    I’ve heard some explain this to say that since we will be “as angels” our earthly relationships won’t matter anymore. But that’s just an INTERPRETATION of that verse. It doesn’t come out and say that.

    Who can help us with this? We’d like to get some more thoughts from others.

    I hope I didn’t spoil your golf game Bob :oops:.

  6. As you guys discuss what our eternal purpose might be after we shed this pesky old life that’s run by time – let me say this.

    I see many people who feel that our eternal purpose is to grow closer to God. While I certainly wouldn’t quibble with that, I don’t believe God put a period at the end of that sentence. While we each have a relationship with Him -I believe it is part of the much bigger picture given, for instance, over and over in 1 Cor 14 – for the edificaton of the saints. This was never meant to be a solo show. It is a learning experience meant to be shared with others who are also living a learning experience so we can all bodify each other and be His bride. (yeah, I made that word up – but nothing else fit)

    There have been great men/women of faith who were that – filled with faith and holiness- gaining personal insights but what was the purpose if those were not shared with others? I believe that is the reason we are given the ‘ah-ha’ moments we have. God’s purpose is shown through his body – one very important way is through the love/acceptance/mercy/ the body shows its various members (even those anal ones 🙂 ). It wasn’t said that the world would belive on Him because of the holiness of the people – but by their love for one another.

    So – I believe God’s eternal purpose is sharing. Sharing Him, sharing ourselves – the good/bad/ugly – with both the inners and the outers. We just don’t see an example of any other way.

    That ain’t easy – I guar-on-tee – but it’s oh so fulfilling.

  7. Wow, I missed visiting here a couple days and all this is written about Eternal Purpose. Thanks Charile for making this a topic.

    There is so much I could “yak” about here, I don’t know where to start.

    I’m sure of one thing regarding God’s Eternal Purpose, that purpose was in motion before time was created and before we came on the scene. I used to have the mindset that all of God’s world revolved around me (us) and the redemption of man was the “main thing” in God’s universe. Consequently, I thought (by default) that God’s chief plan for His Son, Jesus Christ, was to die for me, so I could have life……and “play golf and fish” forever and ever.

    I almost weep now, thinking about what a self-centered yahoo I am….even in light of the wonders of God’s majesty and wisdom.

    The Center of God’s Universe is His Son, Jesus Christ!! The Center of God’s Universe is NOT redemption of man (period), but the bringing of many sons to glory FOR HIS SON. All of eternity is centered around God’s Son. The Father had His Son create the world and all that is in it. Then, after it was created, the Father said, Son it is yours. And Son, I want you to be the all encompassing One in creation. I want you to be ALL and in ALL. I want you to be the BIG Cahunna. I want everything to bring you the glory You deserve.

    So, I’m rethinking alot of stuff here. It isn’t “my” mansion in heaven. Ever sing that song, I’ve got a mansion just over the hilltop”. Jesus has to be my mansion. John says, “In my Father’s house are many mansions” (oh goody, I get one of them)….no, the word “mansion” means “dwelling place”. “In my Father’s house are many dwelling places. And hopefully I will be one of those dwelling places in eternity.

    Enough said at this post……enjoying the conversation here. Blessings,
    Gary

    That’s easy to loose sight of isn’t it Gary. I think once we get a grasp on that, we will see the whole Bible differently, espesially in the garden of Eden and what we call the “fall of man.” The Lamb was slain before the foundations of the world (cosmos). God knew the end from the beginning. It even makes predestination take on an interesting possibility since we are not JUST predestined, but predestined IN CHRIST (the slain Lamb). Christ, the preeminent One in ALL things!

    Gary also said, ““In my Father’s house are many dwelling places. And hopefully I will be one of those dwelling places in eternity.”
    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    Gary, have you ever noticed the context in which Jesus spoke this? He had been talking about how He must go away, but would come back to THEM (not us in the future). How woud He leave and then come back? He would come back to them as the Spirit. In Jn. 14:17, Jesus says the Spirit of truth is WITH them (as Jesus), AND will be IN them (as the Spirit).
    As you say Gary, WE are His dwelling places (abodes). How can Jesus go and come again to them and show them the WAY? It is ONLY by, in and through the Spirit of truth (reality) and ONLY Jesus as the Spirit of TRUTH is the WAY and LIFE (the life is in the spirit).
    Now we also know that Jesus came to us as the Spirit when we were born again. We now have God’s life, Eternal life dwelling in us (abodes, abiding). We are still waiting for the day that He will also come back for us as His bride.
    Whatcha think?
  9. Gary in your Sept. 8th email you wrote:
    In so many ways I agree with you here, but we’ve got to remember our God is one. Thinking about it as hard as I can I still don’t understand the mystery of Jesus being God incarnate and yet being separate in some way. We owe our faith to God’s love and His desire to express that love in the form of Jesus……..Himself, living, being tempted in every way, dying here so that we might understand the total depth of that love He has for His creation.
    We are also called sons and daughters of God. There are so many references to this I won’t quote them all, but as sons and daughter of God we should act like that……knowing we are heirs as His children to His promises of eternity. Remember the two overriding instructions though in all matters……love God and love your neighbors……
    Yup, you are so right Bob, it’s hard, nigh unto impossible to understand or comprehend God is ONE, yet Christ now (as a man) is sitting at the right hand of God. AND we are ONE with God and Christ Jesus because His Spirit is now alive in our spirit and we are ONE spirit with God.
    I think that right there is “God’s Eternal Purpose” in a nutshell. Jesus is “the WAY” cuz He is what made it all work for us. How could God relate to man, or from our side, how could we possibly relate to God? God sent us THE WAY. He packaged Himself in an embryo then placed it in a virgin. To coin a east Texas phrase, “Who’d a thunk it!?!!”  Not even the angels imagined it.
    It saddens me so much to see so many folks angry at God, blaming Him for everything they have no control over and even hating Him for their own foolish and selfish decisions. I was once such a person (and I still get “ticked” now and again). Yet God still reaches down in love. He sends the rain to the just and unjust.
    God let’s us see His loving nature everyday. The problem is we aren’t watching for it, but it’s there, all around us. How often do we stop to think (or thank Him) about His loving kindness, long suffering, patience, mercy, forgiveness, goodness, etc. that He has shown us in our own lives?
    It’s so sad to see all the “bad press” and horrible testimonies from His people (through out history) that he has gotten/gets over misunderstanding God :(. That’s why we MUST get to know Him intimately. He is a good God! He desires not only that we get to know Him, but EXPERIENCE Him by soaking in His nature to the extent that we begin to live out His nature in our lives toward others. That’s how others will see God and relate to Him. It’s through God in us in love touching others as we live by God’s nature.  That’s the best way to proclaim the good news…LIVE IT by daily soaking in the nature of God.
    How do we start soaking? Well, I’ve been thinkin’ on that and I believe it’s time for me to start working on DOOR #5 :).
  11. Enjoying your thoughts here. Bob – I used to struggle over the oneness and threeness of God. And then how to articulate in an appropriate way. I could write you a BIG book about all I learned during that struggle. All I can say is that there IS communication going on in the Godhead and there is expression of Love within the Godhead. People want to get stuck on terminology whether it is three persons, three manifestations, three energies. The bottom line for me is that there is an immeasurable demonstration of love within the Godhead. And, even more incredible is that when a person looks closely, the Cross is also represented there. The Father wants to glorify the Son. The Son wants to do the will of the Father and the Holy Spirit just wants to manifest the Father and the Son. So each member of the Godhead lives for the other. No wonder we must be able to embrace the cross in order to be like them. Because, the cross is at the center of who they are. The cross is eternal also. It didn’t come into existance at Calvary. It has always been.
    So, it seems to me that in order for us to fit in to any “eternal purpose” we really must embrace who they are, and that means we must learn to embrace the cross.
    Sorry this is a little “run on”. I’m not an English teacher, so I do it and don’t feel to bad about it. 😉
    Blessings,
    Gary
    Man, that’s a good way of saying that Gary. I never thought much about communication going on in heaven, but you’re right on! I’m also glad it’s going on down here on earth with us earthlings, that is communication, I prefer communion, going on from God to man and visa versa. Not only that, but even communion going on man to man. Roll that all up and ya got FELLERSHIP!
    You’re right Gary, the cross is eternal. To me the cross can be summed up in, “not my will but Your will(God’s will), be done.” It’s a demonstration to the whole world, above and below the earth, that victory came through surrender.
    It just keeps gettin’ better. May I have more please!
